Borussia Dortmund returned to Bundesliga action on Saturday, beating Schalke 04 by four goals to nil in the Rivierderby.
Lucien Favre had a lot of injury concerns going into the game and took time after the match to update the press on the injuries of Marco Reus, Dan-Axel Zagadou, Axel Witsel, Emre Can, Nico Schulz and Giovanni Reyna.
A lot of players in the treatment room meant that the Black & Yellow team went into the match with key players missing.
Reyna was set to make his first start in the Bundesliga for Dortmund but was replaced by Thorgan Hazard in the last minute after injuring himself during the warm-up session.
In his update, the boss said he expects Witsel and Can to return as soon as possible but ruled out the possibility of defensive rock, Zagadou playing again this term.
Reus has been out of the team since February with an abductor injury while Zagadou suffered an injury to the knee during last month’s training.
“Many teams will have a few players who will be injured,” Favre said. “It won’t be long for Witsel and Can, Zagadou will not be playing this season. Marco Reus has not yet trained with the team.”
“He (Schulz) was injured at the beginning and now he’s injured again. He’s not allowed to do anything for two or three weeks.”
Hazard who had cramps heading into the weekend scored and assisted during the game before coming off later, while Favre provided an update on the American; “We began training duels quite late. I hope that Reyna has no problems,” Favre added.
With games approaching fast and the title challenge shaping up, Favre will be hoping to have his players fully fit in the next few weeks.
