Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, football clubs’ pre-season tours have been cancelled, so that large congregation are restricted and the virus is contained. Borussia Dortmund were supposed to tour in Asia, specifically in China, Singapore, and other South-East Asian Countries. This has officially been cancelled, but the club has plans to compensate for their physical absence.

The club recently revealed their plans for a virtual Asia tour so that players and the fans in Asia can still have some form of connection.

Michael Zorc, the Managing Director of the club, said, “Many fans and partners in the region approached us with the desire to be as close as possible to them, especially in such a difficult situation. This gave rise to the idea Dortmund, and in close cooperation with the locations of our offices in Singapore and Shanghai as part of the preparation for the Bundesliga season 2020/21, to be sent digitally to Asia.”

Benedikt Scholz, BVB Head of International & New Business, said “Very quickly after it became clear that COVID-19 would make it impossible for us and our Asian friends to look forward to a real long reunion this summer, we looked intensively at alternative options. The result is this virtual journey that we know will never replace personal contact with people. But it was and still is important to us to express our solidarity with our worldwide fans and friends in this way And of course we all hope that we will soon get through this difficult phase together.
This is an excellent initiative by the German giants and clearly displays the club’s commitment and willingness to maintain relationships with fan bases from around the world.
