Borussia Dortmund topped Group F of the UEFA Champions League after their 2-1 win over Zenit Saint Petersburg on Tuesday night. This makes them one of the 8 group winners.

According to UEFA rules, Group winners will face second-placed teams of the other groups. However, there is the exception that in the draw, teams from the same domestic league cannot be drawn against each other.

Here are Borussia Dortmund’s possible opponents in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16:

  1. Atletico Madrid (Second in Group A)
  2. FC Porto (Second in Group C)
  3. Atalanta (Second in Group D)
  4. FC Sevilla (Second in Group E)
  5. FC Barcelona (Second in Group G)

Borussia Monchengladbach (Second in Group B) and RB Leipzig (Second in Group H) will not be drawn against BVB owing to the rule mentioned earlier.

UEFA will conduct the draw for the Round of 16 on Monday, the 14th of December at Nyon, Switzerland. The draw starts at 12:00 (CET).

The first leg of the Round of 16 will take place on February 16/17 and 23/24, and the second leg will take place on March 9/10 and 16/17 2021.

As Dortmund topped their respective group, they will get the home stadium advantage. This means that they will play the second leg fixture at the Signal Iduna Park.

In the 2019/20 season, Borussia Dortmund came up against Paris Saint Germain in the Round of 16. Dortmund won the first leg 2-1, however, goals from Neymar and Berat in the return fixture saw PSG go through on a 3-2 aggregate.

This time around, Dortmund will be hoping to make it to the quarter-finals of the competition, and the home-leg advantage should make the job a little easier.
