Borussia Dortmund will take on MSV Duisburg in the first round of the DFB Pokal Cup for the 2020/21 season. Duisburg plays in the Liga 3, making them a third-tier German club. They are based in North-Rhine Westphalia, which is the same state that Borussia Dortmund are based in.

Duisburg were relegated from the Bundesliga at the end of the 2007/08 season and now find themselves stuck in the Liga 3 for the second consecutive year, after a couple of spells in the 2.Bundesliga.

The last time the clubs faced each other was in a friendly in 2014 when Dortmund came out 6-1 winners thanks to braces from Robert Lewandowski and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

In the 49 times the clubs have come up against each other in all competitions, Dortmund have won 25 times, lost 11 times, and drawn 13 times. However, the only time the clubs have faced each other in the DFB cup was back in the 1974/75 season when Duisburg came out 3-1 victors.

The DFB have announced that the first round of the cup will be played between the 11th and 14th of September, which is just one week before the start of the Bundesliga season.

Dortmund only made it to the round of 16 in last season’s DFB Pokal competition, where they were knocked out by Werder Bremen. That was the same game where Marco Reus suffered his devastating adductor muscular injury.

Dortmund will be hoping to make further strides in this year’s DFB Pokal. The club’s website said, “The DFB will announce the exact scheduling for the first-round fixtures as soon as possible once all potential venues have been registered.”
